Okay I know, not strictly Apple related. But it’s buzzing around the interwebz, and I browse the internet from my Apple laptop so it’s relevant.

So Gap introduced a new logo and the online “community” is in an uproar. Believe it or not I didn’t actually have a problem with their new logo but whatever. So everyone has their pants in a bunch over this deal and so Gap’s president responded:

Okay, I mean really! This guy keeps saying it’s fast, while he can’t even get it to scroll! And a mouse cursor on a touch screen? What’s the point? And I have to push a button to bring up the keyboard? Why can’t the keyboard be smart enough to come up when needed. There are <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/">other</a> <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">devices</a> that have this figured out!
Oh, and a Control+Alt+Delete button? Seriously? I’m sorry, that thing is just LAME!

Happy 25th Birthday Mario!

Since this is the tenth anniversary of the release of OS X Public Beta I was looking at screenshots of said version of OS X (that was before it got <a href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/09/13/mac-os-x-public-beta">Fireballed!</a> I suspect it will be back, which is why I am linking to it anyway). Anyone remember those awful pinstripes? They were EVERYWHERE! Ugh! OS X looks so much better today. And how about that Finder? Who says Finder hasn’t improved?
But you know what’s funny? I don’t think there’s a single element in the screenshots of OS X Public Beta that has not evolved or changed in some way, and yet it is still very recognizable as OS X. Weird, that.

This is a re-run of the original review. I read it once a few years ago. After I switched to Mac and started getting all geeky about it, I played catchup. Ever since then, I always read John’s reviews of the OS when a new version comes out. He’s thorough, but good.
One interesting tidbit I picked up from my quick skim just now, OS X Public Beta took up a whopping 800 MB. How far we’ve come!

Today marks the day that OS X Public Beta was realeased to the public. Apple was just coming out of it’s own little dark ages. A lot of folks didn’t like OS X at the time, and it did have it’s problems in those days. But as Apple knew then, and we all know now the potential of OS X was there. And in fact OS X turned out to be Apple’s saving grace. Apple would not be where it is today, might even be bankrupt if not for OS X. Without OS X we would not have the modern Macintosh. Without OS X we would not have iPhones and iPod Touches. Hey, even you PC users, I doubt very much you would have Windows 7 as it exists today without OS X spurring on the advancement of the modern operating system.
